Buck has worked in District 191 since 2012 and has been recognized several times for her teaching and leadership, including as the 2020 recipient of the district’s Spirit of Excellence Award, which honors employees who exemplify the best of what District 191 strives for.

She is a leader in District 191 and across Minnesota in practicing and advocating for equitable, inclusive education, ensuring students in her class are represented in the curriculum and have opportunities to share their own cultures with classmates. In 2023, she co-authored “The Rhythm of Somalia: A Collection of Songs, Stories, and Traditions” with former District 191 colleague Qorsho Hassan, which serves as an oral history and ethnomusicology, a cultural preservation resource, and a first-of-its-kind guide for teachers who hope to bring Somali music into their classrooms.

“Becca's outstanding work in our community reflects her dedication and passion,” said Gideon Pond Principal Salma Hussein. “We are immensely proud of her achievements.”

Buck also teaches in the Kodály Institute at the University of St. Thomas and is a frequent presenter and guest speaker both locally and nationally regarding culturally relevant teaching in music education.

Buck will be recognized during the MMEA Midwinter Convention on Feb. 15.
