GIdeon Pond Elementary in District 191 named School of Excellence

Gideon Pond Elementary has been named a 2026-27 Minnesota School of Excellence, an honor awarded by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA). Gideon Pond was selected for its exceptional practices in student-centered learning and its commitment to professional growth in staff members.

“This recognition belongs to our entire Gideon Pond community—our students, staff, families and community,” said Dr. Salma Hussein, principal of Gideon Pond. “We believe every student deserves to be known, loved, challenged and supported. When students trust that they belong, they begin to believe in themselves, build confidence and become who they are capable of being. This honor affirms our shared commitment to leading with humanity and ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.”

Among the several characteristics MESPA pointed to in announcing the award was Gideon Pond’s intentional work, both inside and outside the classroom, to build relationships with students and create a culture where students feel valued and connected. 

Gideon Pond was also praised for its commitment to helping educators continually grow in their practice. New teachers engage in a variety of professional development opportunities tailored to their experience and goals while experienced educators are encouraged to lead and mentor their colleagues, facilitate teams and pursue leadership opportunities. To further the culture of learning, Gideon Pond engages in a partnership with the University of Minnesota so experienced teachers can mentor aspiring educators.

School of Excellence status is given to a select group of Minnesota schools each year after they commit to a sustained period of self-reflection and peer review. The work centers around six research-based standards of effective schools in the areas of leadership, vision, student learning, the culture of adult learning, data and decision-making, and community engagement.
